About Dr. V

Joseph C. Varcadipane, M.D., a native of New Jersey, graduated from Princeton University in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in Economics.  Having an interest in business, he worked in finance as a securities trader prior to returning to school to pursue medicine.  He received a postbaccalaureate certificate in premedical studies from Columbia University and graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now part of Rutgers University) with his MD in 2008.  He completed residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Hawai’i in 2013.

After residency, he went on to complete fellowship training with Dr. Joel Matta, a world-renowned hip and pelvis surgeon at the Hip & Pelvis Institute at St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.  Dr. Matta is largely credited for developing modern day anterior hip replacement as well as being one of the most well-regarded pelvis and acetabular trauma surgeons in the history of orthopedic surgery.  During his time with Dr. Matta, he focused on complex hip and pelvis reconstruction and worked with Dr. Matta’s partners in knee replacement and general trauma.

After his fellowship with Dr. Matta and his partners, Dr. Varcadipane completed additional fellowship training with Dr. Edward McPherson at the LA Orthopedic Institute.  Dr. McPherson specializes in treating complex joint replacements of the hip, knee and shoulder and is highly regarded as a top surgeon nationally and internationally in this subspecialty of orthopedics.   During his time with Dr. McPherson, Dr. Varcadipane gained a breadth of knowledge in treating these very difficult and complex problems.

Dr. Varcadipane focuses primarily on hip and knee replacement surgery and specializes in using less invasive surgical techniques. He offers primary hip replacement surgery using the anterior supine approach, which helps patients recover faster with the least pain possible.  He also performs complex revision hip replacement through anterior as well as posterior approach depending on the circumstances.

For patients with advanced degenerative disease of the knee, Dr. Varcadipane offers total knee replacement and partial knee replacement as options for patients depending on their their pattern of disease.

For patients with traumatic as well as developmental issues around the hip and pelvis, Dr. Varcadipane’s offers significant experience with procedures such as periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) for hip dysplasia and fixation of fractures of the pelvis and acetabulum.

 

Lastly, Dr. Varcadipane has extensive experience in treating a variety of orthopaedic problems from sports injuries to general orthopaedic trauma.

Dr. Varcadipane is actively involved in research and surgical technique, and has been honored as a scientific presenter at the meeting of the International Congress of Joint Reconstruction.

Dr. Varcadipane is married with two children and is an avid surfer.
